What Should I Expect During a Spravato Treatment Session?

If you or someone you love is struggling with depression that hasn’t improved with traditional antidepressants, you might be considering new options. At Etherios Therapy, we specialize in Spravato® (esketamine) treatment: a breakthrough, FDA-approved solution for adults with Treatment-Resistant Depression or severe depression accompanied by suicidal thoughts. Knowing what to expect during a Spravato session can make the process less intimidating, so let’s walk through the journey together.

How Can You Decide If Spravato Is Right for You?

The first step at Etherios Therapy is a complimentary 15-minute Spravato consultation. This initial conversation helps determine whether Spravato is a good fit for your unique needs and sets the stage for a safe and structured care journey.

During this phase, you’ll schedule your first visit, complete intake paperwork, and consult directly with one of our experienced psychiatric providers. If you’ve tried at least two antidepressants without success, you may be eligible for Spravato. Our team will also guide you through the insurance approval process, making treatment as accessible as possible.

How Do You Prepare for Your First Session?

Before beginning treatment, you’ll complete a brief pre-screening questionnaire to ensure Spravato is safe for you. This includes reviewing your medical history, current medications, and checking for certain conditions like uncontrolled high blood pressure or a history of psychosis. These steps help us provide a treatment plan that is both safe and effective.

At Etherios Therapy, affordability and transparency are a priority. Many insurance plans, including Select Health, United Healthcare, and BlueCross BlueShield, are accepted, and medication costs can be as low as $10, depending on your coverage.

What Happens During a Spravato Treatment Session?

Spravato is administered in our clinic as a nasal spray using a pre-measured device. You’ll be guided through the process in a calm, supportive environment, with a dedicated team present for your comfort and safety. The medication is absorbed through the nasal passages, reaching brain pathways involved in depression more rapidly than traditional antidepressants (see more about how Spravato works).

Once administered, you’ll stay in a comfortable room under medical supervision for about two hours. This observation period is essential for both safety and support, as Spravato can cause mild side effects such as feeling relaxed, lightheaded, or a gentle floating sensation. These effects typically subside within one to two hours, and most patients find the experience manageable, even soothing.

What About Monitoring and Safety?

Your safety is our top priority. Throughout your session, our team will monitor your blood pressure, heart rate, and general well-being. Because Spravato can cause drowsiness or temporary changes in perception, you won’t be able to drive yourself home. We recommend arranging a ride with a friend, family member, or a reliable service like Uber Health.

Sessions are typically scheduled twice a week for the first month, then once weekly for the second month. Many patients notice significant improvements in mood and outlook during this period. While Spravato is not considered addictive when used as prescribed under medical supervision, your progress and safety are continuously monitored.

What Will I Feel During Treatment?

Everyone’s experience is unique, but patients often describe feeling:

  • Calm or deeply relaxed

  • Lightheaded or slightly “floaty”

  • Sleepy or less aware of time passing

These sensations are generally mild and fade after the session, but our team is always nearby if you need reassurance or assistance. If you have questions during your treatment, feel free to ask. Your comfort is important to us.

What Happens After Your Session?

After your session, you’ll stay in your private room for two hours. You’ll be free to head home once your driver arrives. Because your thinking and coordination may be temporarily affected, you’ll need someone to drive you home. We’ll schedule your next session, answer any lingering questions, and connect you with resources to support your ongoing progress.

At Etherios Therapy, we believe in integrating Spravato treatment with ongoing therapy for the best, most lasting results. We partner with a network of skilled therapists who specialize in post-treatment therapy. If you don’t have a therapist, we’re happy to help you find one who fits your needs. If you want to continue with your current mental health provider, we can coordinate care to ensure seamless support.

What Is the Role of Therapy in Your Spravato Journey?

Spravato can spark powerful insights and emotional breakthroughs. But real, lasting change happens when these insights are explored and deepened in therapy. Integration sessions with a trained therapist help you build on your progress and create positive long-term change.
